Orthopaedic Surgeon
A supportive dressing that allows finger movement and light hand use will be applied. You may experience some pain, swelling and stiffness after surgery.2 It is important to elevate your hand in the first 48-72 hours post-operatively to prevent throbbing and swelling.
Scar - You will have a scar on the palm. This will be firm to touch and tender for some months. Firm massage with moisturising cream may help but should only be done after the wound has healed and your surgeon has given you the all clear.
Driving - if you are comfortable and have regained full finger movements you may be able to drive a car after 2 weeks. Initially your grip is weaker than previously and slightly uncomfortable. Although frustrating, this usually recovers in 6 - 12 weeks.
Exercises – you will be instructed to do simple hand exercises to help regain strength but you should not overdo things as it may delay recovery.
Work - timing of return to work varies according to your occupation. The following are approximate general guides:
• Supervisory role - 1 to 2 weeks.
• Office work - 2 to 4 weeks.
• Physical work (e.g. cleaner) - 4 to 6 weeks.
• Heavy manual work - 6 to 10 weeks.
