Surgery is recommended if you have had the problem for a long time, your symptoms are severe, non-surgical treatments have failed or if the doctor detects wasting of muscles or loss of sensation in the hand.

Surgery involves cutting the ligament over the tunnel to relieve the pressure on the nerve, and therefore opening the carpal tunnel space. The operation can be performed under local or general anaesthetic. Surgery is generally very successful but should be performed by a surgeon with an understanding of the sometimes variable anatomy around the median nerve to decrease the risk of complications.
