Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become weak and brittle increasing the risk of fractures. Risk factors include age, positive family history, some other medical conditions, use of certain medications can also lead to osteoporosis. Fracture history is very important. We use a scan called a BMD in assessing osteoporosis and its treatment. Osteoporosis is always treated with lifestyle measures but can sometimes need other medications as well. This includes a diet high in calcium or calcium supplements, adequate amount of Vit D and weight bearing exercise. There are a range of medications – weekly or monthly tablets and 6 monthly subcutaneous injections that stop excessive bone reabsorption. Now there are some anabolic or bone building medications as well. These are injectable medications that can be used in those where the first line medications are not enough.
