The management of an ankle fracture can depend on multiple factors, including the type of fracture, its displacement and associated injuries. As a general rule, an ankle fracture is considered unstable if more than one malleolus is affected or if there is an associated syndesmosis injury. For acute injuries, it is recommended that you remain non-weight-bearing through your injured ankle until you have obtained medical advice. Surgical fixation is indicated for unstable or displaced ankle fractures. Internal fixation methods typically include with plates and screws, and or a suture rope implant for stabilisation of the syndesmosis.
