If a surgeon provides “no gap” cataract surgery, then there will be no out of pocket costs for patients who have appropriate private health insurance policy that covers eye surgery. There is often a large variation in the fees and out of pocket costs charged by different surgeons. There was a recent Four Corners program on the ABC reported by Dr Norman Swan, “Mind the Gap”, on this topic. It pointed out that there is no evidence to support any public misconception that surgeons who charge high fees and high out of pocket costs are clearly much better than other surgeons. Cataract surgery is a very delicate operation requiring high levels of skill and training. It adds greatly to a person’s quality of vision and life. Each person should firstly have confidence in their surgeon as the number one priority. Having said that, reasonable costs of surgery and seeing appropriate value in the benefit it provides is also an important factor that should be considered.
