It is not recommended that you wear a face mask to protect yourself from coronavirus (COVID-19). Facemasks should be used by those people who show symptoms of the virus to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. Facemasks are also to be used by healthcare workers and people who are taking care of someone sick in close settings.

March 2021 Update:
Masks are now generally recommended (and may also be required by state jurisdictions) during instances of significant community transmission. This is especially in areas where it may be difficult to maintain a 1.5m distance such as public transport.
Whilst masks give extra protection from COVID-19, we should still observe the following practices:
- Maintain a 1.5m distance from other people
- Practice good hand hygeine
- Get tested for COVID-19 and stay at home if you have the following symptoms.

I'd follow your local state health department advice. They monitor things closely and make careful decisions.
