Could my birth control running out make me have super long periods?

I've been on the Implanon bar for three years now. I know that it'll be the full three years in December. But lately, I've been experiencing very long and heavy periods that can last anywhere from two weeks to a full month. I've been told that it could be because my body is going through a hormonal change but I'm not sure at this point. -
