The cost of a bunion (hallux valgus) operation will vary depending on what kind of surgery needs to be done, and who does it.

If you choose an orthopaedic surgeon to perform your surgery then the surgery will be covered by both Medicare and your private health insurer - this is because orthopaedic surgeons are registered medical practitioners. Some orthopaedic surgeons may charge you a gap, whilst others (like myself) provide a no gap service, meaning there is no out of pocket cost. If an orthopaedic surgeon does your operation then your anaesthetist and hospital fees are also covered by Medicare and your private health fund.

If you get a podiatrist to perform your surgery, then there is no Medicare or private health fund rebate for the surgery or the anaesthetic (since podiatrists are not medical doctors, and are ineligible for Medicare for surgery).
