Unfortunately, chronic pain is poorly understood by the vast majority of medical and allied health professionals. However, there are a number of highly proficient pain specialists and good resources out there that you might find helpful.
Firstly, stay clear of anyone who claims that their special technique, device or medication can cure you, and insist that you need to see them for hands on treatment for x number of weeks to realign your muslces/joints/bones. These treatments fail to address the biopsychosocial nature of chronic pain, and only address the idea that the body or tissues are the cause of the pain.
Choose therapists who not only understand the biopsychosocial nature of pain, but actually practice it as well.
Therapists who focus on education and active therapies are the ones to go for, i.e. techniques that help you help yourself and aim to decrease your reliance on external support.
Techniques that are useful in treating chronic pain include:
Graded movement and exercise,
Mindful meditation, mental relaxation and anti-catastrophisation methods
Education and better understanding about pain and the psychological factors involved in chronic pain.
Some resources you might find helpful in better understanding chronic pain include:
Explain Pain - David Butler & Lorimer Moseley
The Protectometer - David Butler & Lorimer Moseley
Beyond Pain - Anjelo Ratnachandra
