Can PRP injetion help with Tarsal coalition?

I had surgery 7 years ago for Tarsal coalition and it was unsuccessful. My foot is stiff and painful, after physical activities is often difficult to walk. I have had consultation with 2 specialists regarding fusion of the ankle and they do not recommend that I do it. Can PRP injection help with Tarsal Coalition?

Thanks very much for your question. It sounds like there are a few things going on with your ankle and foot. What kind of tarsal coalition do you have, and what kind of surgery did you have for it? (Eg excision/resection of coalition, or fusion if it was subtalar coalition?). Given that the majority of tarsal coalitions are subtalar or calcaneonavicular, it's also not clear why ankle fusion (ie fusion of a different area to the coalition) is being recommended.

The short answer to your primary question is that there is no good evidence to suggest that PRP injections will help with your coalition symptoms.

I would recommend assessment by an experienced specialist foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon, particularly since you've already had an unsuccessful operation. Best of luck.

I'm not too familiar with which surgeons are in which areas in Melbourne, but your best bet is to go to the Australian Orthopaedic Association's 'Find a Surgeon' link and search for Foot & Ankle in VIC:

    Good luck.
