The actual cost of the cosultation will vary from practice to practice according to the seniority of the specialist and can range between $150 and $300.The medicare rebate (refund) for an initial consultation when you have a valid referral from another medical practitioner is $72.75. If you have reached the Medicare Safety Net the rebate is increased to $85.55. If you have reached the threshold for the Medicare Extended Safety Net the rebate is increased to a total of $256.65.
If you ring the reception at the practice to which you have been referred you can enquire about the total cost and out of pocket expenses for a consultation.
