Every orthodontist has their own protocol as to how often and when you should wear your retainers. The first 6-12 months after having the braces off are the most crucial and have a higher risk of relapse. Ideally wear your retainers nightly for as regularly as possible, during day time as well if you can.

The main reason for night time wear being a common recommendation is that some patients don't really like wearing it during the day time as some retainers are visible and can make speaking difficult, it tends not to bother you much whilst wearing it during sleep.
