Adenomyosis is a condition where the glands that usually line your uterus (the endometrium) are present within the muscle layer of your uterus (the myometrium). This is a condition that is associated with endometriosis and fibroids. Whether adenomyosis affects your fertility directly is a controversial point... If it is associated with endometriosis, there is an increased risk of subfertility.
An ultrasound scan is good at picking up adenomyosis and an MRI is only marginally more superior in diagnosing the condition. Therefore it is not necessary that you have an MRI.
Ultimately to fix adenomyosis and to diagnose it effectively a hysterectomy (removing the uterus) is required. In a young woman such as yourself who wants to have babies, this is obviously not an option. The recommendation would be to take medications to control the symptoms that you are having. The Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill or the mirena IUD are good options and should relieve the symptoms. When you decide to have a pregnancy, you would need to stop the medications.
The cause of this disease is not known... There are several theories but we are not sure as to why it happens to certain women.
