  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Why am I suddenly experiencing tonic clonic seizures during the day? I have has them during sleep for 10 yrs.

Recently, I had a tonic clonic seizure during the day which ended with a night in hospital and compression fractures to my L1, L2 & L4 vertebrae. I have only ever had seizures in my sleep for 10 years. What may have caused the change? I live in a small regional area, so I only see a GP, and my meds have not been reviewed, and there seems to be no concern as to why my pattern has changed. I am terrified of having another seizure - especially during the day and now as I am recovering from the fractures. I am on a low dose of epilim - 1000 mg a day

This must have been a shock for you and it is normal for you to be concerned about having further seizures. There may have been something that triggered this seizure. For example you may have been exceptionally tired, stressed or unwell or your Epilim blood level may have dropped for some reason. Your GP may suggest that you have an Epilim blood level done.

Considering that you normally do  not have seizures when awake, it is important that you have your epilepsy reviewed so speak to your GP about this and ask if it would be advisable for you to see a Specialist. There are Neurologist in all capital cities who specialise in epilepsy care so speak to your GP about who would be an appropriate specialist for you to see if he/she advises.  Keep in mind that if you have had a seizure when awake you will need to stop driving. Discuss with your GP when you can resume driving.

Please call epilepsy action on 1300 37 45 37 and ask to speak to an epilepsy nurse if you would like to discuss your epilepsy and seizure care and prevention.
