  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

How to see a specialist ?

I recently moved to Australia. I want to take my wife to skin specialist as she is getting some strange acne and moles. I live very close to Royal north shore hospital and people are giving very good review for this hospital so I would definitely like to visit this hospital for my wife. I am not sure how to approach a specialist. Some of my friends confused me about the concept of visiting a GP first and then visit a specialist. I don't have any medicare and I don't know any GP. In this scenario what first step I can take ? I have to find a GP by looking for doctors or Can I approach a hospital and ask for a GP ? Little confused. Please bare my question if it is silly but I just want to get clarified :) :)

In Australia, to see a specialist you need a referral from your GP. If you do not have Medicare, you are not confined to a bulk-billing GP and can see any GP, depending on your convenience,  to obtain a referral.
