  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Do I have depression or anxiety?

I am really down at the moment. I feel replaceable, unneeded. I don't have any MEANING in my life. I feel like my workplace is undermining my principles. I am emotionally unstable; sad a lot of the time, and nothing can cheer me up. I have had a couple of panic attacks. I normally get energy from being with people, but at the moment all I want to do is stay home by myself. I went through a period not long ago where I thought people I knew were stalking me, hacking into my email account, tracking my phone. I am a self diagnosed ENFP personality using MBTI. Do I need to see a professional?

Yes, you definitely would benefit from seeing a professional. You have symptoms of  anxiety and depression. You also are experiencing paranoid thinking, emotional lability and an existential vacuum.

It requires an expert to give you a proper diagnosis which will then enable  appropriate treatment.

Your GP should be your first point of call. Your GP can refer you on to a psychiatrist, or  clinical psychologist, both of whom are trained to make accurate diagnoses.

While your treatment will be decided by your health care team, in general a combination of medication and psychotherapy yields the best results.

I endorse what Renee wrote. I am in remission from Major Depressive Disorder. Several factors have contributed to this:

    (1) My psychiatrist did a detailed assessment of me and, after some trial and error, we found an antidepressant which works for me. He also offered me general advice and support.

    (2) My clinical psychologist was also helpful. She taught me a number of non-pharmaceutical approaches, notably CBT and mindfulness/meditation methods,

    (3) Last but not least, my hard work has been significant.

    All the best.

I can see that you are an intelligent person who likes to research and find out more about yourself.

Your diagnosis of yourself may be quite valid. You know yourself better than anyone else.

You are indicated that at the moment you are experiencing a lot of distress a mixture of anxiety and depression and seeing a professional such as a psychiatrist or psychologist may be very helpful. They will help you to confirm a diagnosis of anxiety or depression.

They can offer treatments that will help you to be yourself again.

Your first step should be to see your GP for an assessment and then most likely get a Mental Health Treatment Plan that would allow you to see a Psychiatrist and/or Psychologist and to claim under Medicare.
