Progesterone levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle.
They are at their lowest in menstruation with a rise throughout the first half of the menstrual cycle and peak about a week after ovulation (mid-luteal) before they start to drop again. The falling progesterone level triggers menstruation. Results should always be interpreted according to when in the cycle the blood sample was taken.
