It may be worth consulting with your doctor and asking about medication to help lower your uric acid levels. Medications have largley replaced a low purine diet, but if you are still suffering high levels of uric acid or have severe gout, avoiding certain foods can help. Consulting with an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) is my best advice as an APD can work with you to formulate a plan that works for you and is still highly nutritious.
It can be helpful to lose weight if you are in the overweight/obese category and drinking plenty of water (approx. 3L/day) can help excrete uric acid. Wine, dairy products and foods with vitamin C (kiwi fruit, strawberries, citrus fruits) appear to be protective as they have an alkaline ash effect.
