Mannose binding lectin is a protein which is important in the innate immune system, which plays a role in dealing with (in particular) bacterial infections. People with mannose binding lectin deficiency are at increased risk of bacterial infections.
Mannose binding lectin deficiency is typically genetic - blood transfusions are not a known risk factor for it. If you (or somebody who you know) has mannose binding lectin deficiency then arranging a consultation with a clinical immunologist would be a good plan.
