    What is causing my severe period pain?

    What can cause severe period pain when Endometriosis has been ruled out & things like OCP (The Pill) & Mirena haven't helped?

    I'm 29 years old, female, my periods started at age 12, always been painful, mostly regular cycles (average 32-35 days), but the pain has worsened over the past few years (as I've gotten into my late 20's).

    Pain is definitely cyclic in nature, starts a few days to a week before my period, & continues throughout the period (which generally goes for 7 days). Heavy bleeding with multiple clots, often quite large.

    Laparoscopy done last year, nothing found. Latest ultrasound only shows polycystic ovaries.

    Have tried OCP, Depo-Provera shots, & Mirena, none have stopped bleeding or pain.

    Pain & bleeding is so severe that I am unable to do anything or go anywhere (I barely make it to the bathroom!) when my period starts, if I do go out for anything I find myself collapsing to the ground in agony & weakness.

    Because you have multiple cysts on your ovaries on ultrasound does not mean that you have PCOS Please click on the link http://www.womhealth.org.au/conditions-and-treatments/95-polycystic-ovarian-syndrome-pcos
    It is very unlikely that this is the cause of your extreme period pain. Endometriosis is usually the culprit in this instance. Since a laparoscopy has ruled this out perhaps you need to be thinking about other specialist services. You may need to consider a pain management specialist. Some alternative therapies can offer help especially acupuncture.
