  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

    Do I have adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD/ADD)?

I am a 21 year old male currently working to complete a degree.
I have always found it hard to concentrate on my studies and when reading I usually have to go over it twice or three times so the words actually sink in.
I am very impulsive and restless. As I child I was extremely “naughty” but my parents didn't get me tested. There are more symtoms I have which correlate with add, but for times sake I won't mention them all.
Often I feel like my brain is all over the place with a million thoughts at once. I really feel like this is hindering my abilities to achieve my goals.

    The short answer is: maybe.
There are a number of things that can contribute to the difficulties you describe, and ADHD is certainly a prime candidate. Given that your troubles with concentration and restlessness are hindering your goals, I suggest seeking an assessment by someone who specialises in adult ADHD. If you do have ADHD they will develop a treatment plan to help you address your key areas of concern. Even if you don't have ADHD, they will still be able to help you develop more effective ways of meeting your goals.
If you get a referral from your GP, you can claim a Medicare rebate to help cover the costs of seeing a clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist for an assessment - depending on your financial situation, some may even bulk bill your appointments.
