Dietitian, Nutritionist, Sports Dietitian
Great question, and one that I have recently been asked by one of my clients. I too am a little surprised that fruit has zero points as she was consuming much more fruit than required and wondered why her weight wasn't coming off.
Fruit is a great, healthy and nutritious snack but you are right it does contain natural sugars. It is certainly a much better choice for a morning or afternoon tea snack rather than grabbing a couple of biscuits, cake or high fat muffins. Unfortunately this is where the confusion sets in. I would recommend you stick to the new Dietary Guidelines for Australian's which recommends 2 serves of fruit every day. One serve of fruit equals 150g or 1 medium piece (apple, pear, med banana, peach) or 2 small pieces (apricots, plums, kiwi fruit) or 1 cup of fruit salad (if canned or tinned choose no added sugar and those in natural juice).
If you are still getting confused with the many mixed messages out there in regards to nutrition I would recommend you consult an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD). You can find an APD by logging onto the Dietitians Association of Australia website (www.daa.asn.au)
