Stem cell therapy holds great promise to treat many forms of nerve damage in the eye. However, to date there is no accepted treatment in mainstream practice. Some private clinics may claim that stem cell treatments are possible but none of them have been proven to work and some may be considered dangerous. There are some clinical trials using stem cells for people with advanced retinal disease (a disease called choroideremia) but it is not applicable to glaucoma. People have tried stem cells to repair glaucoma damage but even experimentally, this has met with little success at present though people are still trying. There is some experimental evidence from Cambridge U.K. that stem cells may be able to halt glaucoma progression but this has not reached clinical trial. This is an exciting and emerging field which is changing rapidly so there is hope that in the future treatments for glaucoma involving stem cells may become available. Sadly not yet. Stay tuned however….
