Multifocal intraocular lenses are an option for patients requiring cataract surgery and would like some independence from glasses. They are not good for everybody, and in fact, are only good for a minority of patients in my opinion. This is because there is a compromise with these lenses. Multifocal intraocular lenses are different to multifocal glasses.
Multifocal intraocular lenses are good for patients with low vision demands, and do not like using glasses for reading. There have been significant advances in technology recently, and there are a number of new lenses on the market. Before deciding to have these lenses, discuss your visual requirements with your ophthalmologist. I would not suggest these lenses if you have high visual demands - truck driver, watch maker, etc. There are some personality types that do better than others.
Multifocal lenses can be great for some people, with significant benefits. There are some side-effects, such as halos around lights when driving at night. Most patients find the benefits outweigh the side-effects.
I can't recommend anyone specifically in Melbourne for your uncle. I would ask his GP or optometrist for a recommendation. Most surgeons who are members of the Australasian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons would perform cataract surgery with multifocal intraocular lenses.
