My two daughters aged 22 & 23 recently visited a doctor at a local medical centre. They both have seen him on a couple of prior visits to this medical centre during the previous 18 months. At this visit he told my youngest daughter that he should do a breast exam of her as he had done a breast exam of her sister at the prior visit but she had not yet had one. My daughter was embarrassed but agreed to it as we have all discussed in our home, the importance of such checks. However, as my daughter was getting redressed, he told her sister that they both should have a pap smear done while they were there as they had never had one. My youngest daughter heard this and told him that they didnt need one yet as they are both still virgins. The doctor told her that even though the risks were increased in sexually active women, they should still have a pap smear as he had an elderlybpatient who had never had sex yet she got cervical cancer. My daughters did not have the pap smears yet.
