A yellow stool is usually associated with steatorrhea (or malabsorption of fat). There are many differing causes of steatorrhea including:

    • Malabsorption (coeliac disease, IBD)
    • Pancreatic insufficiency (lack of enzymes needed to digest fat)
    • Bile salt insufficiency (lack of bile salts needed to absorb fat from the diet)
    • Drug-induced (some medications may cause steatorrhea)

It's best to speak with your GP about these symptoms and to confirm diagnosis. Once diagnosed an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) will be able to help you to establish more regular bowel movements through dietary modification. To find an APD head to www.daa.asn.au
