Anxiety has both a cognitive (thinking) component and a physical one. If we think anxiety provoking thoughts, the what ifs …. , then anxiety tends to increase and this can create a range of physical responses including muscle tension, rapid breathing, butterflies in the stomach. Because of the discomfit that anxiety causes, you can start to avoid the situations that are seen as provoking that anxiety and this tends to make things worse in the long run. While this is a natural response to such unpleasant feelings, it often serves to reduce people's resilience to situations they perceive as stressful. There are a number of therapeutic approaches that can assist people in addressing excessive anxiety including Mindfulness based therapies and cognitive behavioral therapy. As, Nadine has suggested, it would be most useful to work through these issues with a qualified professional.
