It is common to feel confused and frustrated when experiencing anxiety. Many people beat themselves up about it, believing it to somehow be “my fault”.
However, there is no single cause for anxiety. We know that a tendency to experience anxiety is carried in your genes. In most people, developing pronounced anxiety symptoms is the results of a combination of environmental and biological factors. For example, we know that a tendency to experience anxiety can be inherited. Then, a simple stressful event can trigger anxiety symptoms. Brain chemistry and personality styles may also play a role.
Knowing the factors that contributed to your anxiety developing is not a critical element of recovery. It is important that you seek help from a Psychologist or other mental health professional who can help you identify the factors that are ‘keeping your anxiety going’. Then, you can learn skills to break the cycle and reduce your symptoms.
