Will my milk come in after having a hysterectomy delivery of my baby?

I am 35 weeks pregnant and been told it is almost certain I will be needing a hysterectomy after delivery of my baby in 2 weeks. Although the safety of myself and my baby is paramount (I had a stillborn daughter last year and had a vertical ceasarian incision) I am so worried that without my uterus my milk will not come through or be sustainable if it does.

The short answer is that hysterectomy will not affect breastfeeding. To breastfeed you need hormones from the pituitary gland, as Tess explained, a few other hormones not related to the womb or ovaries, and a breast. That's all.

It is extremely unusual that a hysterectomy should be recommended for delivery of your baby.

As long as it is a simple hysterectomy, and there are no extra issues other than teh surgey of a simple hysterectomy then the opertaion should not have an impact on milk production and you should have the joy of being able to breast feed your baby.

    All the best!
