Hi,
First for some anatomy, a bursa is a fluid filled sack which is located in areas of the boy where there is a space between moving structures. The body does not leave gaps so, for example, under the tip of your shoulder there is a region where several tendons, nerves and blood vessels pass into the arm, this is above a couple of other bony structures, the bursa here serves three purposes, a) it fills in the remaining space not occupied by these structures; b) it has some function as a shock absorber; and c) it can act as a kind of pulley with certain movements. These bursae are located in several places throughout the body.
Due to trauma or improper function, the bursae may become inflamed and cause pain. Depending on the site, the cause of inflammation and how long the problem has been around, there are several methods of treatment which can be applied. If it is bothering you, you should consult a musculoskeletal specialist such as a chiropractor, osteopath or physiotherapist.
Hope this helps.
