It is great that you have started to incorporate activity into your routine, keep up the good work. As your question indicated you are aware that diet also plays a significant role in weight loss. I would suggest that you have your breakfast within half an hour of your walk to set up your metabolism for the rest of the day. Greek yoghurt and omelettes are some breakfast choices that can help keep you full and prevent cravings.

Everyone’s metabolism is unique, as you may have found already what works for one of your friends may not work for you.

First of all congratulations on making a start on your exercise routine each day! For breakfast I often recommend to my clients to include 3 different food groups. For example a bowel of whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk and fruit for sweetness. As you are only 17 years old it's important that you achieve a well-balanced diet to support your bodies needs during these periods of growth.

    General weight loss guidelines include:

    • Choose low-fat, low sugar foods such as milk, yoghurt, and breakfast cereal
    • Make sure you get plenty of fruit and vegetables each day (go for 2 fruit and 5 veg)
    • Choose lean cuts of meat and skinless chicken, and avoid processed meats
    • Reduce your portion sizes at main meals (e.g. dinner)

I would suggest you have a chat with an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) who can help you to come up with a healthy weight loss plan that works for you. You can get in contact with one by visiting the Dietitians Association of Australia's website www.daa.asn.au and click on the “find an APD” tab :)
