  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

    Is my cycle normal?

I am 38 years old i have started menopause but i am finding it hard coping with the moods. I have been to a doctor who did blood tests that showed my estrogen levels where quite low.

I am still getting a very light period every month which lasts for about 7 days where as before it was 3 days and heavy the first day or so and then gone on the third day.

Is a light flow that lasts 7 days normal? also is there anything you can suggest to help with the moods and tiredness? thanks

As hormone levels typically change throughout a woman’s cycle, these blood tests will need to be repeated to provide an accurate result. Premature menopause happens to about 1% of women and often the cause is unknown. In a small number of cases factors such as autoimmune disorders or a genetic fault are implicated.

Menopause means the end of the menstruations. Women are in menopause, only when they have not had a menstruation period for more than 12 month. This gradual event is preceded by a few years of peri menopause. While the average age of menopause is around 50 years old, the average age of which peri menopause starts is around 40. This period is associated with irregular menstruation, which may be quite heavy or alternating light and heavy. It may also be associated with hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, mood swings, dryness in vagina, changes in weight, concentration loss, loss of libido etc.
Based on your description, you are experiencing the peri menopausal symptoms and changes in the menstruation cycle are common. However before attributing your symptoms to peri menopause, I would suggest that you consider a few investigations including a pelvic ultrasound. There may be several other medical causes for your menstruation changes, which need to be excluded such as endometrial and / or cervical polyps, medications, significant weight changes, thyroid hormonal abnormalities, endometrial hyperplasia etc. Your doctor will be able to initiate these investigations and then a referral to a gynaecologist may be appropriate.
