Why does it take so long to diagnose bipolar even when in the family?

    Hi,
My sister has bipolar and so does my father. My sister suffered depression for 15 years before she was finally diagnosed, after a major episode of mania. After a number of years of trialling different medication she now leads a normal life. My brother, however, has also suffered major depression for at least 8 years, and continues to suffer. Why??? Apparently because he hasnt had a major psychotic eposide (yet). Why is he not getting proper treatment? I know its not my responsibility, but I cant stand seeing him suffer.

Hi, I really feel for you. It is so difficult to watch a family member suffer, and not be able to help them.  Without knowing your brother, I am not sure why he has not been receiving the treatment that he needs. I can only suggest that if he is not happy with his GP, Psychologist or Psychiatrist, he should consider seeing someone else to get a second opinion. 8 years of depression seems too long to me. If he is recieving good assistance from a psychiatrist but is still not well, it could be that he has not been taking his medication regularily. I hope this helps.
