A dental implant is a titanium screw which gets screwed into the bone and it takes the place of the root of a missing tooth. Then when the bone has grown around that and made it firm into the bone, a crown can be placed upon that implant and then you'll have a crown on an implant which is the same as having a crown on the root of the tooth, but the root of the tooth isn't there and the implant is.

A dental implant is a metal fixture ( usually made of titanium ) that is surgically placed into the jaw bone where a tooth would normally exist. This fixture acts as an artificial root to help rebuild a tooth above the gumline to replace a lost tooth or group of teeth.
