It is terribly variable. The crown itself is mechanical. It's made out of, usually gold, or gold and porcelain, and so it lasts for a very long time, indeed. But, the tooth that it is sitting on may not last nearly as long, depending on how well you look after it.

If cleaned adequately at home and professionally cleaned at the dentist regularly, it should last around 10 years.

A well made crown can last a lifetime. The tooth or root that it sits on will only last as long as the patient keeps it clean and free of dental plaque with brushing, flossing and toothpicking.
