It is hard to know what is causing the pain from your description. Has there been an injury? How did the pain start? What is the nature of the pain (sharp, dull, burning etc) Is it associated with swelling or redness? These are all important in trying to determine wat the pain is.

There is a condition called Temporal Arteritis in which the artery (blood vessel) becomes inflammed resulting in pain and tenderness in the region of the blood vessel. It is not related to injury and tends to simply manifest itself without warning. It is not related to arthritis. It is best treated with steriods. This is only one possibility. There are certainly other conditioins that can cause similar symptoms. I still suggest seeking medical advice to further determine what this pain is. There is no substitute to examining the area concerned.
