Hot compresses are usually recommended for fifteen minutes, four times a day. Following the application of heat, gentle lid massage may be tried by using the (clean) index finger to “roll along” the chalazion towards the lid margin/lashes; for perhaps one minute.
If no significant improvement within four weeks, antibiotic and steroidal anti-inflammatory drops may be added.
If still not showing improvement, oral antibiotics eg doxycycline may be given instead as 50mg twice a day for a two-week course.
If still persisting, another two options are steroidal anti-inflammatory injections of the chalazion or, a minor surgical procedure, incision and curettage of the chalazion.
Otherwise, after a few months, the chalazion may resolve or disappear by itself, without further treatment.
