Great question! Vitamin A is important for our eye sight. It helps us to see better. The B vitamins (niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, biotin, vitamin B6, pantothenic acid) help to release the energy from the foods that we eat. Vitamin C and E act as antioxidants in the body mopping up “free radicals” which can damage our cells. Vitamin E also helps protect our cell membranes (i.e. brain, nerves) from damage, and Vitamin C helps with collagen formation. Vitamin D is important for protecting against osteoporosis as it enhances the absorption of calcium in our small intestine.
For more advice on how to achieve an adequate diet including all vitamins and minerals, or to see if you are at risk of deficiency in these vitamins consult an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) who can perform a comprehensive nutritional assessment of your diet.
