I have PCOS, I am overweight and my cycle is now regular. Why is this?

I have had PCOS for 22 years now and had irregular periods unless I was on the pill. It all changed after my fourth son was born.

For the last three years I have been having periods every 27-29 days. I recently had a blood test which my GP says is good. The blood test was taken on day 20 the FSH was 4 u/l, LH 4 u/l and oestradiol was 366 pmol/l. I am taking diabex 500 xr, fish oil and now ritalin. I have only just started exercising daily again. I had gestational diabetes with 3 of my boys.

My blood pressure is just above normal. I use a cream for 21 days which contains wild yam and chaste tree. I eat low gi, protien at all meals and gluten free when I can as I am type 2 diabetic. I am working on reducing the weight and want to reduce the diabetes.

Why am I on a 27-29 day cycle, obese and small signs of PCOS such as facial hair?

PCOS has a strong connection with insulin metabolism, and it looks like there may be a connection for you as you suffered from gestational diabetes with your pregnancies and are on metformin. This can effect your weight, especially with weight stored around the middle.

It's great you are eating low GI foods and that you've started exercising again, well done! These can both help with insulin control, and I'm sure you'll start to see some benefit from the exercise as you continue with it over time. Chaste tree is a great hormone regulating herb too, so it's great you've got that included in there.
