Drinkwise Australia has a 5 point plan to delay a teens first drink. The steps are: 1. Discuss the issues, 2. educate by example, 3. Listen and engage, 4. a good relationship, 5. your expectations. The plan is downloadable at http://drinkwise.org.au/parents/delay/ . There is also a video that goes with it, as well as loads of other great stuff on the site.
I think that is it always important that brain is at one of its most exciting and vunerable phases during adolescents and that therefore alcholol and drugs can have very serious negative effects during adolescence. Check out the National Geographic artivle called ‘The Beautiful Brain’ and the ABC DVD set - 'Whatever - the science of teens". The recent research provides evidence that delaying the first drink is important and that it is not ok for teenagers to drink, even under the supervision of parents.
I hope this helps
