When a person is chronically ill they are often isolated. This is dependent on what the illness is. Isolation can often lead to depression because the person is feeling that they are not able to do their work, they are not able to socialize and they are not able to mix with the people that they normally mix with.
There also might be particular illnesses more likely to be related to depression such as spinal cord injuries, where a person is quite severely incapacitated. That may lead to depression.
