  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

What can I do if i need time off because of my depression ?

I don't have leave left and I really can't work atm.
  • Find a professional to answer your question

  • If you are not well enough to work, you are entitled to have time off. Unfortunately, if you have used all your sick leave, any additional time off will probably be unpaid unless your employer decides otherwise.

If you see your GP and they determine that you are suffering from depression and are unable to work, they will provide a medical certificate which is a legal document that requires your employer to give you time off.

You should also ask your GP for a referral to psychologist, if you aren't already receiving psychological treatment for your depression, so that you can get better as quickly as possible.
