How to raise a child with mitochondrial disease?

Our son began developing symptoms of mitochondrial disease by age 10. We know the condition is not reversible/curable, and are worried for how it may affect his health later (it is associated with diabetes, heart disease, etc). Any advice/information would be helpful!

Hi, I am so sorry to hear that from both the professional and personal point of view. My name is Dr Karen Crawley and I run the Help and Information line for the AMDF which has just become linked to the Healthshare website, I was a GP originally and became involved in the illness when our daughter was diagnosed at age 8yr back in 2007. I have gained a wealth of information from both the personal and medical view points especially over the last 5 years when the AMDF was commenced. It is an illness that is far to difficult to explain via emails or to read about only, so I am more than happy to chat to you anytime to answer your questions and to try and clarify as much as I can about mito. Please contact me via the AMDF helpline number of 1300 977 180.
