In cases of hep A, B or C, hepatitis is diagnosed by blood tests. In some cases, a test looks for our body's response to viral infection (antibody tests); in other cases, a test looks for presence of the actual virus (viral RNA tests, often called “PCR” tests).
With heps B and C, some people clear their infection within the first few months but their immune response will continue to produce antibodies. In these cases, only RNA testing can properly diagnose if they have a current infection.
