A suspected diagnosis of carcinoid syndrome (see http://www.healthshare.com.au/questions/43128-what-is-carcinoid-syndrome ) can be confirmed with a 24-hour urine test for 5-HIAA (5-hydroxy indolacetic acid), a chemical that is formed when the body breaks down the serotonin that is secreted by a type of tumour called a carcinoid.
If necessary, the location of the carcinoid can be demonstrated by using a whole-body scan called an octreotide scan or a DOTA-TATE PET scan.
