    What causes gastritis?

  • Find a professional to answer your question

  • Gastritis is a non-specific term describing inflammation of the stomach.  Gastritis may be an acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term) condition.

There are multiple possible causes for gastritis including infection of the stomach with Helicobacter Pylori (a bacterium that may be treated with antibiotics), alcohol, several medications, bile reflux, and many inflammatory and autoimmune conditions including Crohn's disease and Coeliac disease.

The precise subtype of gastritis may be better defined by taking samples or biopsies from the stomach during a gastroscopy (endoscopic evaluation fo the stomach).

Can PPI medication cause gastritis? I know it is used to reduce stomach acid but is it possible to get breakthrough acid that causes a gnawing, burning sensation in the upper abdomen?
