Barrett's oesophagus is a condition that is strongly related to gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and therefore many of the risk factors are similar. These risk factors include

    • hiatus hernia
    • obesity
    • smoking
    • excessive alcohol intake
    • diabetes
Added to these is that certain risk factors can have a higher risk of developing malignancy (cancer), these include
    • male sex
    • obesity
    • longer standing/chronic reflux symptoms.
However reflux symptoms are extremely common in the adult population (up to half of all American adults describe reflux symptoms at once a month), however only a small percentage develop Barrett's oesophagus.
