It is important to visit a doctor if you suspect you may have a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Because many people with an STI may not have any symptoms, regular sexual health check ups are important, particularly if you have engaged in unsafe sexual activity, sexual activity with a new partner or with a partner who may have other partners. STIs that might be tested for may include gonorrhoea, chlamydia, HIV, hepatitis B, HSV (herpes simplex virus) and genital HPV (human papillomavirus). Testing may include urine or blood tests or taking swabs from the genital area.
