The skin of the vulva is very delicate, and thus vulnerable to a wide range of conditions. These can include skin conditions, sexually transmitted or other infections, pain syndromes, precancerous conditions and less commonly, cancer.
Some women have a genetic predisposition to particular conditions or allergies or hypersensitivity. In other cases irritants may have triggered a vulval condition. Some vulval conditions appear to be autoimmune, in that an overactive immune system may play a role. In some conditions, the cause may yet be unknown.
