Research shows that approximately 16% of women develop symptoms of postnatal depression following the birth of their child and consequently detecting and treating mental health disorders in the postnatal period is important. Continuous crying and extreme feelings of highs and lows are examples of general symptoms of depression however an assessment by a GP or mental health specialist is required for proper diagnosis. There are treatment and therapy initiatives available to assist women who are experiencing postnatal depression. The beyondblue website www.beyondblue.org.au has information on signs and symptoms of PND and of support services that can assist.
